Is Paying for Auditions Legit?

by Jimmy

(Canada)

QUESTION:

A company in California says they can get me over 20 auditions but they charge a yearly fee. I told them that talent agencies get paid only when we get paid. They say they are not an agent but they find auditions for actors. Is this legit?

ANSWER:

A casting service or website can charge a membership fee to make listings available to actors, but nobody should guarantee you auditions for an upfront fee. The difference is that although casting services can charge you to get listings of auditions (the same way you would pay to buy a newspaper with classifieds to get a job), once you submit to an audition, no one can charge you, claiming you’ll get called if you pay money. Hope this helps!
