HB Studio

At this acting school in NY, renowned actor-director Herbert Berghof and his wife, the legendary actress Uta Hagen, trained many award-winning actors, including Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.

Full-time acting programs consist of at least seven classes a week and must include acting technique, scene study, speech, voice and movement classes.

Students can design the rest of their program by choosing from a wide range of electives, including Improvisation, Singing, Dialects, On-Camera Technique, Stage Combat and Directing. There is also the option to design a Musical Theatre program.

Only working professionals teach at this NY acting school. Prospective students may audit a class or possibly take a trial class.

Performance opportunities: The Studio offers several Performance Lab classes. Students can audition for the HB ensemble, a member company that performs the works of new American playwrights.

Career preparation: The school offers professional development classes that cover all aspects of the business of acting.

What you’ll need to apply: Some classes require an audition. International students are welcome but need to submit TOEFL scores if English is not their first language, as well as a resume, statement of purpose and 2 letters of recommendation.
