The American Academy of Dramatic Arts

Over the 125 years this NY acting school has been around, it has trained numerous actors who went on to win Oscars, Tony awards and Emmy awards. The long list of alumni include Robert Redford, Grace Kelly and Danny DeVito.

Acting studies consist of a two-year full-time conservatory program or a 2-year part-time program for those who need to take evening classes. Beyond the usual acting training in NYC, students study theater history, stage combat and make-up.

Performance opportunities: The school houses 3 small theaters. Actors work on 4 productions each year with a professional director and costume designer. A select group of students may continue their studies for an additional year by becoming members of the Academy Company.

Career preparation: Graduating students appear in a final showcase performance in front of industry professionals (admission into the second year is by invitation only). Acting students attend career preparation classes, workshops and seminars with industry guest speakers. A few internships in entertainment are also available. Academy Company members perform in a series of productions in front of agents and casting directors.

Degree: Students who graduate after 2 years obtain an Associate of Occupational Studies. Students who are invited into the Academy Company obtain a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Acting. Credits are transferable, although the number of credits successfully transferred varies from one college to another.

Financial Aid: Scholarships are available through the school’s Financial Aid Office, as well as work-study programs and assistance in applying for outside financial aid.
