QUESTION:

I’m a 19 years old girl from Taiwan.I’m wondering what name should I printed on my headshots. Should I print my name that is on my pass port (in English)or should I use my English name that I named myself? (Ps.We speak Chinese in Taiwan.)

ANSWER:

That’s a good question. I don’t know how things work in Taiwan, but for American actors, your stage name doesn’t have to be your legal name. Before picking a name, though, actors who work here should check with the unions to make sure it’s not already taken. Your stage name is also the name you use for unions like SAG AFTRA and Actor’s Equity. Also, when you get a job, you want to make sure your employer or agent makes out the check to your legal name, not your stage name.
