The Studio For Actors

This professional studio offers acting classes in AZ for actors ages 12 and up of all levels.

Acting classes include acting technique, scene study, character study, screen acting, commercial acting, comedy improv, voiceovers and auditioning. Most classes are in the evening. Actors can also study monologues, voice, diction, dialects, accent elimination and stand up through private coaching sessions.

There is also a child acting package for parents of kids 6-12 years old who want to act.

Performance opportunities:Students get to showcase their talents every 8 weeks at the small 40-seat theater of this Arizona acting school.

Career preparation:

All acting classes are taught by the owner of the studio, an actress with significant Broadway, film and TV credits and former Saturday Night Live performer.

Actors interested in breaking into the Arizona acting world of voiceovers can take a 6-week private course where they get to create their voiceover demo in a real recording studio.

University of Arizona Theater Program

UA offers acting classes in AZ for those interested in getting a BFA in Acting or Musical Theater. With its mix of conservatory-style training and theater studies, this theater program at one of the top colleges in Arizona gives students a taste for what it will be like to work as a professional actor.

Acting classes are based on Stanislavski and voice training on the Linklater technique. Actors study many acting styles, from Shakespeare to realism theater and Commedia dell’ Arte. Other classes include dance, stage combat and film acting. Musical theater actors study musical theater, ballet, jazz and tap dance. They take both private and group voice classes to expand their instrument and repertoire.

Performance opportunities:

The school’s repertory theater has two large professional stages and a full season of 6 shows (one Shakespeare play, 3 other plays and 2 musicals). After their first year, acting students get cast on mainstage and often get to perform to full houses.

There are special performances for freshmen, including a touring musical revue.

Career preparation:

Juniors and seniors appear in an industry showcase each year.

There are internship opportunities with a LORT B theater, the Arizona Theater Company, allowing students who secure understudy roles to gain points toward their Actor’s Equity card.

Actors learn from working professionals alongside film and television students.

Students take auditioning technique classes.

Actors can get certified in Stage Combat.

Degree: BFA in Acting, BFA in Musical Theater.

Financial Aid: $60,000 in scholarship for theater and need or merit based tuition waivers.

What you’ll need to apply: Both the general application and the application for the College of Fine Arts, application fee, test scores, transcripts, picture and resume and a live or recorded audition (1 minute monologue from a list of approved texts, plus 2 songs for musical theater applicants).

Acceptance rate: 15-20 actors every year only (including musical theater).
