Steppenwolf Theatre

This Chicago acting school is for experienced actors only. The 10-week full time summer residency program offers training in various acting methods, from Meisner to Viewpoints and Feldenkrais.

Actors also work on scene study, improvisation and text analysis and develop a condensed version of a play as an ensemble. At this prestigious acting school, students learn from guest teachers and ensemble members like Joan Allen and Gary Sinise.

This Chicago acting school also offers classes on the West Coast and has a special program for high schoolers.

Career preparation: Actors attend a series of seminars with professionals like Chicago casting directors, agents and directors. Students also get guidance and feedback from teachers and industry professionals as they choose and work on auditioning monologues.

Financial Aid: Some need-based scholarships are available.

What you'll need to apply: Application and application fee, a letter of recommendation, a headshot and resume and an audition (auditions are held at the acting school in Chicago, as well as in New York and San Francisco).

Acceptance rate: 24 students participate each summer.
