Michael Howard Studios
This acting school in New York offers a one-year conservatory program. The acting training is inspired by many school of thoughts with the belief that every actor must develop his own method.
Classes are 5 days a week from 9am to 2pm. During the Fall semester, students focus on the essentials, which include acting, scene study, improvisation, movement, voice, acting for film and television, sensory technique and Chekhov technique. Starting in January, students are introduced to specialized workshops like mask, clown and acting as a business.
Performance opportunities: Students completing the one-year program participate in a full theatre production and an industry showcase.
Career preparation: Students can choose to take a professional scene study class and enroll in two professional workshops for an additional fee, which gives them an opportunity to study with working actors.
What you'll need to apply: Picture and resume, 3 letters of recommendation (2 must be from members of a theatre community, educational or professional), an essay, interview and audition (you can submit your audition on tape if you live far away).
Acceptance rate: About 1 in 3 students are accepted into the one-year conservatory program.
Audition policy: This is one of the acting schools in New York where students are actually encouraged to pursue acting work to complement their studies (classes end early so that students can audition and work).
