What is Henry VI about? Who does Joan play?

Henry VI is Shakespeare's version of the story of Joan of Arc, the French maiden who helped the French win several battles against the British in the 15th century, but eventually was burned at the stake. As all of Shakespeare's dramas, the historical plot is just a backdrop for human drama. In this monologue, Joan tells the Dauphin of France about how the virgin Mary appeared to her and changed her, turning her into a worthy combatant and knowledgeable leader for the French troops. You can read more information about the play by consulting SparkNotes online, but you should really get a copy of the play and read it if you plan on performing this monologue. The Folger's edition has page by page explanations of Shakespeare's lines and scene by scene plot summaries to help you understand the play.
